It is impossible to go through life without setting an example for someone, whether we like it or not. We all influence the people around us in some way, and it is important that we are aware of the example we are setting, as our behavior and attitude can have a lasting impact on those people.
The example we set starts with ourselves - when we strive to be the best version of ourselves, to live with integrity and follow our own moral compass, that sets a strong example for others to follow. It shows them that they don't have to settle for less than what they deem as right or good, but rather stand up for their beliefs and strive towards goals that will make them proud of themselves. When people see this example being set by someone else, they have something tangible that they can look up to and aim towards in their own lives.
This example isn't just confined within the walls of our own home or workplace - it spreads much further than that. Our words and actions ripple outwards into our communities and beyond. As such, it's very important to consider how these ripples may affect other people. How are you treating your coworkers? Are you respectful in your conversations? Are you taking care of yourself so you're able to take better care of others? All these questions should be taken into consideration when thinking about the kind of example being set by your everyday behavior.
Leadership isn't always an official role - more often than not, it's an informal one where people naturally rely on each other for guidance or support. Even if you haven't asked for it or aren't actively trying to lead anyone else, people around you will still be observing your actions and taking cues from them. It's essential that we remain conscious at all times of the type of leader we want to be; one who leads with kindness and respect; one who listens; one who is open to learning new things; one who stands up for justice; etc.. By living according to these values on a daily basis, this will help ensure that you're setting a positive example for those around you no matter what role you may fill in society.
